Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?

I had been active in my community and in my local and state nursing organizations. I felt making the leap to a regulatory board was a logical next step!

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?

I continue to network and attend conferences where am able to meet other nursing leaders. I also stay politically active.

What impact have you had serving on a board? Example?

I feel that many of the recent rule changes affecting the practice of nurses has been impacted by my contributions!

What advice would you give someone going into a board leadership position for the first time?

Be sure to attend meetings prior to appointment and find out what the workload might entail. Once you are appointed, be sure to participate!

What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader and eventually obtaining a board position?

Work with local organizations and become politically active. You might be surprised who might be able to help in the future.

Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?

Who’s better to represent patient interests?

What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?

Time.
