Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?
As a nurse I can offer a view other than economical.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?
Always looking at where we need to be five years from now and planning in that direction.
What impact have you had serving on a board? Example?
I was able to get shelters for our bus stops.
What advice would you give someone going into a board leadership position for the first time?
Go in with learning ears, big eyes, and a closed mouth. See how it works and then when the situation presents, use your knowledge to wow them. It is surprising how fast you become an expert in the group.
What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader and eventually obtaining a board position?
Learn your group and what is really on their agenda.
Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?
We offer a perspective that is not seen in every profession.
What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?
We are seen as nurturing but not seen as being able to control a situation.
