Which Nursing Organizations are you currently a member of? Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses, Association for Nursing Professional Development

Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?
Being a nurse for 20 years, I am ready to give back and serve the community with a unique perspective in a way not available in the hospital.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?
I currently volunteer time speaking at public libraries regarding the opioid crisis and assisting our local school nurse with health care days. I stay current in the literature to be abreast of evidence based practice. Leadership seminars and classes provide a knowledge base.

Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?
On a recent trip to the statehouse, I had the opportunity to hear several discussions about healthcare without a nurse present. Nurses have an expertise that translates to the corporate setting by communicating and providing care to others.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?
Knowledge of the process is the most significant barrier.
