Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?

I served as a volunteer on the education and steering committees of the organization I was passionate about when a call went out for new board members to apply. I wanted to be more involved in the organization and applied.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?

Read and participate in workshops related to board service.

What impact have you had serving on a board? Example?

I have used my nursing experience, writing skills, and organization skills to assist in editing board documents.

What advice would you give someone going into a board leadership position for the first time?

Ask a lot of questions and be prepared to donate time and money.

What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader and eventually obtaining a board position?

Workshops, online articles and websites such as BoardSource and Taproot. Joan Garry has a wonderful Facebook page with lots of information. Also, The Calif Endowment and Annenberg Foundation.

Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?

Nurses have incredible insight into so many human issues as we work on the front lines with people at their most vulnerable moments. Many organizations, especially non-profit organizations, address social issues that nurses come into contact with frequently.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?

I don’t think board service is even on the radar of most nurses. Another significant issue is scheduling time for meetings for many staff nurses.
