Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?
Nurses serve to make a difference and change lives for the good. The first opportunity was as an author, when AWHONN approached me to be on the Editorial Board of Advisors for two magazines, after one of my articles was published; I was eager to assist in writing for the professional and consumer magazines to create more info for nurses and the public.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?
ACNL is a chapter of AONE, where we are able to learn about hot topics and network. The BOD of National Speakers Association allows me to meet people in various industries and learn and grow.
What impact have you had serving on a board? Example?
When I was on the BOD of Options for Women (pregnancy clinic), I was instrumental in assisting with innovative ideas, including a mobile clinic. As the President of NSA NC, I have several improvement projects, including a new website, a new membership category, a gala auction, and updating their Speakers Academy curriculum.
What advice would you give someone going into a board leadership position for the first time?
Listen first and learn the culture before adding ideas.
What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader and eventually obtaining a board position?
Read the book ‘The Secret’.
Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?
We need to be seen as thought leaders and not just servants.
What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?
Nurses aren’t socialized to understand life outside the HCO.
